Hospitals: the best of the best

Learn which hospitals are at the top of their specialty based on U.S. News & World Report's rankings.

When it comes to the top hospitals in the nation, U.S. News & World Report keeps a close eye on things. While doctor recommendations are generally a good bet, you don't always have a choice of where you end up in the case of an emergency. Depending on your age, condition and history, where you head for treatment could make a big difference. So, using a thoroughly researched set of specifics, U.S. News tracks down where you should go.

How the rankings are figured
Every July, new rankings are released based on hospital surveys that have been conducted. These facilities are ranked based on one of 16 specialities: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, geriatrics gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology urology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, rheumatology, and ear, nose and throat.1 From there, rankings are calculated based on reputation with specialists, survival, patient safety and other care-related indicators, such as patient volume and the nursing staffs. Patients of the top hospitals on these lists can expect to find world-renowned surgeons and specialists who may advise or assist on their cases.

Top picks for cardiology and heart surgery
All 720 hospitals up for consideration in the specialty were required to have at least 1,321 patients who were in need of expert treatment in 2009, 2010 and 2011.2 The top 10 were:

  • Cleveland Clinic
  • Mayo Clinic
  • New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
  • Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • Brigham and Women's Hospital
  • Duke University Medical Center
  • Massachusetts General Hospital
  • St. Francis Hospital
  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
  • Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital

The Cleveland Clinic, located in Cleveland, Ohio,  is a nationally ranked hospital and received 100/100 points on the scale. It comes in the top 10 for many other specialities as well, including cancer. Based on the most recent findings, this facility completes 26,124 inpatient and 55,830 outpatient surgeries annually.3

Best picks for diabetes and endocrinology
In order to be considered for this specialty, the nearly 1,130 hospitals ranked were required to have treated 163 patients requiring expert care.4 The 10 front runners included:

  • Mayo Clinic
  • Cleveland Clinic
  • Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • UCSF Medical Center
  • Yale-New Haven Hospital
  • New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
  • University of Washington Medical Center
  • Brigham and Women's Hospital
  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital

It should be noted that No. 9 and 10 had the same score of 67.2/100. And while there are a few new names on the list, many of those found appear on the previous specialty's top 10 as well. However, this time the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., takes over the top spot with a 100/100 score. The organization also has facilities in Arizona and Florida, and more than 500,00 patients seek treatment at one of the three locations on an annual basis.5

U.S. News recommend that anyone who is in need of specialty care seek out treatment at one of the hospitals with a national ranking status. At these locations, patients can generally expect to receive top of the line care from extraordinary medical professionals.
