Benefits of Yoga

Over the past few decades, yoga in America has largely left behind its origins as a spiritual practice and inspired exercise programs that can help reduce stress and promote heart health. Now more than 20 million Americans incorporate some form of yoga into their fitness plans

That’s because yoga has a number of important health and quality of life benefits:

  • More grace and agility
  • Improvements in strength and muscle tone
  • Better body awareness and posture
  • Greater flexibility and range of motion
  • Relief from chronic back pain
  • Lower risk for diabetes
  • Increased energy
  • Fewer food cravings
  • A calmer mind, with less anxiety
  • Reduced stress
  • Better, deeper breathing
  • Improved sleep

If you are inspired to try yoga, it’s important to find a class and instructor that are right for you. The environment should be noncompetitive, and the instructor should support your goals for taking yoga. If you don’t feel supported overall, the class is wrong for you; if you can’t find a class in which you do feel supported, your best bet may be to do yoga at home.
